We asked the pros how to achieve this flattering look.
The 2024 hair trends show that we are in the year of bobs, with endless variations of the chic crop appearing with every season change – from the French Bob to the latest “Cowgirl” bob cut. Tom Smith, a ‘Hairvoyant’, has predicted that Victoria Beckham’s signature waist-skimming layered hairstyle will be the must-have look for this summer.
This trend offers a very luxurious and effortless finish, but also a unique concept. Unlike most hairstyles, which are cut to frame our facial structures and accentuate them, this one is aimed at doing the same with our body…
What are ‘Hourglass layers’?
Tom Smith, a trend forecaster and artist in residence at Billi Currie, as well as International Creative Colour Director for Evo Hair, describes them this way: “Long, fluid layers cut to very long hair.” The longest part of your hair should reach the narrowest part on your waist. Layers shorter than the tops of the shoulders should be avoided.
Smith describes the latest trends as “less about flattering one’s face and more about flattering one’s body. The length should sit just at the narrowest portion of the waist to enhance the feminine ‘hourglass shape’. The ends should taper towards the waist, which can be achieved by clever layering. This flattering look is seen on celebrities such as Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Rihanna and Naomi Campbell.
Hourglass layers are a slightly longer and more luxurious version of feathered layers. They’re perfect for those with waist length hair or those who love hair extensions.
Smith suggests that to achieve this glamorous look you should ask your hairstylist: “Ask them to keep your entire length and gently layer through the ends to remove any sharp lines.
The shape should taper at the ends to encourage the hourglass silhouette.
Smith suggests a more sleek finish for styling: “This style is best when it’s smooth or blown-dried, with a minimal band.”
Smith says, “Pre-dry your hair until it is almost dry. Then use a large round barrel brush to create a natural lift and bend.” You don’t need a curl or wave, but rather long fluid lengths and a slight bend.
Smith says that a glossy shine is important to achieve Victoria Beckham’s lengths. “The hair should appear healthy and shiny, so using a weekly treatment like Olaplex Number Three will be essential.”
If you need visual inspiration, here are a few celebrities who have already worn the look.
If you’re looking for a stylish look to complement your outfit, Victoria Beckham’s loose waves will do the trick.
Naomi Campbell’s stylish, waist-length hair will serve as the perfect reference for those who are considering a fringe with a few ‘Hourglass-esque’ layers.
Rihanna is a great example of combining two very popular trends. She has created a look that is both chic and luxurious.
Rosie Huntington Whiteley is a perfect example of how the side-swept look and the side-swept hairstyle go together.
