Mavis Paterson, from Dumfries and Galloway, has proven that age is not a barrier to achieving dreams.
This month, an 81-year-old woman became the oldest woman in history to complete the Gran-d-Tour – the 960-mile (1.540km) ride between Land’s End and John O’Groats. She did this despite the pain from osteoarthritis.
The challenge is in honor of her three adult sons who died four years apart; Sandy in 2012 and Katie in 2013, and Bob in 2016. All of them were in their 40s.
She set off on May 24th with her friend Heather Curley, and used grit determination and pedal power to get to the “finish line” on Saturday June 22nd.
Mavis has surpassed her fundraising goal of £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity which has supported Mavis since her mother and sister both died from the disease.
She raised more than £60,000 for the charity. More than 1,861 supporters donated to the fund and left encouraging messages on the Just Giving page.
One person wrote: “Great achievement Mavis. I’ve done some things in the past, but this is remarkable. Well done to you and your team.”
Another added “Inspirational feats of endurance.” It is shocking to learn that 1 in 2 people are diagnosed with cancer. McMillan and research are both in need of every penny. Well done Mavis.”
On the Facebook page dedicated to the challenge, she told her fans that it was hard to find words. After three weeks on an unforgettable journey. We did it.”
She told the BBC Scotland website that she was exhausted after completing her cycle. “I feel like it’s over, I’m just like ‘what next?'” she added.
“The entire journey was very difficult for myself.” It was difficult, but I have his fire in me, and I continue to press on.
Mavis, who has been cycling for over 20 years, hasn’t taken to the two wheels just for a good cause.
Last year, she took part in a 24 hour cycle challenge around North Rhins, on the outskirts Stranraer in the northwest of Scotland.
Mavis, you are our salutation!
